Assassinations

V-series agents have never been used on the battlefield. They have been used in a very limited way by terrorists to assassinate individuals. 

Several countries have stockpiled a limited number of toxins. Their use on the battlefield has been alleged (e.g., Laos, Kampuchea, and Afghanistan) but not documented to the extent that it is universally accepted. Toxins have been used for political assassinations (e.g., 1978 murder of Georgi Markov with ricin) and terrorists have threatened the use of toxins, usually through contamination of food or water supplies. 

In 1875, spiritualist circles in New York helped launch the Theosophical Society, another major component of the occult revival. The Society was founded by H. P. Blavatsky (1831-1891) and Colonel Henry Steel Olcott (1832-1907). Blavatsky, who was born in the Russian Ukraine, claimed to have studied for seven years under Hindu mahatmas and even to have traveled in Tibet at a time when few Westerners were permitted into the country. Olcott had worked in the Navy Department during the Civil War he had even been one of three members of the special commission to investigate the assassination... 

Beneficial insects associated with fruit orchards show different responses to diflubenzuron treatment (Broadbent and Pree 1984). Lacewings (Chrysopa oculata) in contact with leaves containing 300 mg/kg DW had reduced survival and inhibited molting of first instar larvae, but the assassin bug (Acholla multispinosa) was not affected by contact with treated leaves. Lacewings and other beneficial predator insects fed diflubenzuron-treated, two-spotted spider mites (Tetrany-chus urticae) for 3 days showed no adverse effects after 14 days (Broadbent and Pree 1984). 

When McKinley was assassinated, Theodore Roosevelt became the youngest president at age 42. He is famous for his motto, Speak sofdy and carry a big stick. Roosevelt battled for meat inspection and pure-food laws. Also, he wanted to save the forests and break the grip that big business had on steel and oil. Roosevelt persuaded the diplomats of warring Russia and Japan to make peace. 

Ricin would probably be aerosolized, but it could also be used by an assassin who might prepare it for ingestion or injection. Ricin is not nearly as potent as the C. botulinum toxin, and thus would have to be produced in very large quantities for large-scale use. 

Again, as in Germany, the changing political situation led to a turning point in his life. Dollfuss was assassinated in 1934, and the Nazis pushed in earnest for control. Mrs. Mark saw clearly what these events harbingered, but the effervescent, optimistic Mark did not. He continued his diverse activities undaunted, until late 1937. Finally, at the urging of Mrs.

The term terrorism, according to HSA, Sect. 4(15), is defined as any activity that — (A) involves an act that — (i) is dangerous to human life or potentially destructive of critical infrastructure or key resources and (ii) is a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State or other subdivision of the United States and (B) appears to be intended — (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population (ii) to influence the policy or a government by intimidation or coercion or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping. 

An interesting bit of history regarding platinum occurred in 1978, when a defector from the Communist state of Bulgaria was assassinated when he was shot by a small platinum slug that contained a deadly poison. Because platinum is inert, there was no infection or inflammation, and the physicians did not detect the wound until it was too late to save his life. 

Gentile had been stabbed in the back on his left side, possibly a misdirected attempt to find his heart in near darkness. An assassin in a crowd will try to position his own body to shield his actions from other people, which in this case suggested a left-handed killer getting directly behind his victim. Zorzi was left-handed, and that might well have been another factor that influenced the Ten in reaching their verdict. 

I fetched the book of prophecies and selected a quill to transcribe this one. As always, it was ambiguous, haunting the borderlands of meaning, but the first line looked like a hint that Zorzi Michiel had returned from exile, or wanted to. The second could be a reference to bounty hunters or the Ten s assassins seeking him out wherever he tried to hide—the risk of discovery in Venice might be no greater. The third and fourth lines, I decided, would have to wait upon events. 

Or perhaps the dagger had been routinely looted from a corpse and its story had been embellished over four centuries. I could not but admire the deadly little horror— an assassin s dream, small enough to be easily concealed and quite long enough to kill a man. This cabinet is kept locked ...
