This incomplete review is limited to a description of the interaction of gaseous hydrogen with solid substrates of metals. Though hydrogen can be present as H2r H, H, H, D, T, we mostly consider "ordinary" H (for H2 and h as well as for metastable H(2s) see Steininger et al., 1984, and Eschen-bach et al., 1983). The surface of the metallic substrate can be crystalline, ordered or disordered, amorphous or artificially modulated it can be clean, coated with other metallic elements, precovered e.g. with C, S, CO, or oxidized. [Pg.397]

Tension leg and floating platforms can easily be released and towed away for service elsewhere, which is cheap and attractive. In the case of the fixed platforms, the topside modules are removed by lift barge and taken to shore for disposal. Spira.1- Wound Modules. Spiral-wound modules were used originally for artificial kidneys, but were fuUy developed for reverse osmosis systems. This work, carried out by UOP under sponsorship of the Office of Saline Water (later the Office of Water Research and Technology) resulted in a number of spiral-wound designs (63—65). The design shown in Figure 21 is the simplest and most common, and consists of a membrane envelope wound around a perforated central coUection tube. The wound module is placed inside a tubular pressure vessel, and feed gas is circulated axiaUy down the module across the membrane envelope. Anti-inflammatory agents may be used in conjunction with artificial tears. The only approved agent is cyclosporine emulsion. Administered topically, it is thought to act as a partial immuno-modulator suppressing ocular inflammation, but the exact mechanism is unknown. Cyclosporine emulsion increases tear production in some patients.
