Artificial flavors definition

The definition of artificial flavoring in the U.S. can be found in the CFR [4] and is The term artificial flavor or artificial flavoring means any substance, the function of which is to impart flavor, which is not derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juiee, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof. Artificial flavor includes the substances listed in Sec. 172.515(b) and Sec. 182.60 of this chapter except where these are derived from natural sources. (Note When the preceding quotation from the CFR refers to this chapter, it means the chapter in the CFR, not in this book.) This definition basically states that if a flavoring substance is not natural, it is artificial. 

So whatever you think about plastic, it is definitely not artificial or fake. Artificial implies that something acts as a substitute for the real thing — like artificial flavors. While plastic is sometimes a substitute for another material, plastics are unique materials with unique properties that make them ideal for a wide variety of uses. 

Though ADHD cannot be cured, the removal of artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives has been demonstrated definitively to reduce ADHD symptoms in as many as half of the children stricken with it and that challenges with these chemicals induce hyperactivity in many children. It is suggested that mixtures of hydrophilic artificial colors and flavors mixed with lipophilic preservatives may be at least partially responsible for the hyperactivity induced in many children who consume such mixtures. 

Natural foods are those that are grown naturally and subjected to little or no processing. But there is no official definition of a natural food. The Food and Drug Administration s policy on food labeling only prohibits a manufacturer from calling an entire food natural if it contains artificial colors or flavors or any synthetic ingredients.
