Arsenic trihydride. Colourless inflammable gas, smells like garlic, 2.7 x density of air, very poisonous even at 0.5 ppm. Produces haemolysis. Symptoms can be delayed by 2-24 h nausea, malaise, shivering, intense headache, vomiting, pain in loin, urine port-wine coloured, skin becomes copper coloured, or shows rain-drop pigmentation. Odd changes in eye colouration are reported brown eyes can go grey, said to be due to effects on melanin metabolism. [Pg.667]

ARSENIC TRIHYDRIDE (7784-42-1) A thermallyunstable flammable gas. Violent reaction with acids, halogens, chlorine, oxidizers. This chemical is endothermic can be detonated by shock, elevated temperatures above (572°F/300°C), or powerful initiators. Exposure to light causes moist material to decompose with deposition of solid black arsenic. Low conductivity may cause the accumulation of static electrical charges, and cause ignition of its vapors. [Pg.135]

In the photometric determination of arsenic, arsenic trihydride formed by reduction of the compounds of arsenic (mostly of arsenate) with nascent hydrogen reacts in the medium with pyridine with silver diethyldithiocar-bamate to produce a red colour. Absorbance is measured at 560 nm. The method is used for concentrations of arsenic > 0.05 mg 1 . For the determination of lower concentrations the sample should be first concentrated by evaporation [13]. [Pg.313]

SYNONYMS arsenic hydride, arsenic trihydride, hydrogen arsenide. [Pg.417]

Arsenic (atomic number 33, atomic mass 74.9216) is the 20th most abundant element in the earth s crust. It belongs to the elements of the P block of the Periodic System where it is placed below phosphorus and above antimony. The mass numbers of its isotopes range from 68 to 80 however, only the natural isotope 75 is stable. The gamma-emitting radioisotopes As (half-life 26.4 h), As (half-life 17.77 d), and As ( half-life 80.3 d) are commercially available and often used for method development and control (Krivan, 1987 Krivan and Arpadjan, 1989). Elemental arsenic exists at room temperature as metallic or gray arsenic, and yellow arsenic. As a center element of the P block it can be found both in metallic and covalent compounds. The oxidation states are -III, 0, -i-lll, and -I- V. Arsenic trihydride (arsine, AsHa) is a colourless, very poisonous, neutral gas with a characteristic garlic odour. [Pg.291]
