Various workers have estimated the rate of pyrite formation. Berner (1972) summed the sulfur accumulation rates of various sediment types in proportion to their areal coverage and found a flux of about 10% of the river flux. Li (1981) carried out a similar calculation and finds 30% of the river flux, probably indicative of the uncertainty of the approach. Toth and Lerman (1977) established that the decrease of sulfate with depth in sediment pore waters is a function of sedimentation rate. This information was used to estimate the diffusive flux of sulfur into sediments driven by pyrite formation, again a value about 10% of the river flux. Apparently, pyrite... 

Jayaraman and coworkers [109-111] demonstrated that corrosion inhibition is a very general phenomenon among aerobic bacteria and the extent of corrosion varied with areal coverage and proportion of variable cells. Bacterial by-products in the medium did not account for their observations since fermentations in the absence of oxygen had nearly identical corrosion rates as sterile anaerobic systems [112].

A term on the right side that is higher order in the small ratio hf/hg has been omitted. The areal coverage is represented by the factor b/p, a ratio that can be very small compared to unity for a dilute distribution of islands but which approaches one in value at full coverage. A more detailed examination of these issues is pursued in Section 3.10.
