In the optical, the primary standards are the Sun and Arcturus, which have digital observed spectra at very high signal-to-noise and resolution from Kurucz et al. [3] and Hinkle et al. [2]. We are redetermining the abundances of a wide variety of elements in each of these fundamental standards, then establishing astrophysical gf-values for as many optical and mid-UV lines as possible. [Pg.74]

Plant cytochemistry/histochemistry continues to evolve as fluorescence microscopy (16-19), confocal fluorescence microscopy (20,21), and microspectrophotometry (22) expand our quantitative knowledge of the distributions of chemical constituents in plant cells and tissues. With regard to microspectrophotometry, this is possible for single cells, as the Arcturus Corporation (Mountain View, C A) has developed an instrument capable of isolating single cells. [Pg.40]

The mass loss alternative is contradicted by the detection of lithium in low mass giants, but support for more extensive CN-cycling in the interior is provided by measurements of the 1ZC/1JC ratio in field stars the well-known Arcturus problem... [Pg.19]

The Arcturus Formation is structurally over-lain by felsic volcanic rocks and volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks (Passaford and Lower Shamva formations) and intercalated graphitic argillites (Mount Hampden Formation). Tuffaceous rocks and volcanic breccias occur in close association with porphyry stocks. All are andesitic to dacitic in composition. Associated epiclastic sedimentary rocks are poorly sorted massive, structureless and planar-bedded deposits. Clasts are felsic in composition and include crystal tuff, porphyry and chert, suggesting a very localized provenance. This felsic volcanism has been dated at 2643 8 Ma (Figs 2a and 3g, Wilson et al. 1995) and is associated with the emplacement of late-tectonic... [Pg.199]

Halley s research in astronomy was not limited to studies of the comets. One of his other major fields of interest was the history of astronomy. He read the works of early astronomers, including Ptolemy, Apollonius, Menelaus of Alexandria, and others and prepared translations of some of the original works. One of the discoveries he made while engaged in this research was that stars appeared to have shifted their positions in the skies between the time of the Greek astronomers and his own day. Astronomers had never considered such a notion possible, but Halley was able to show that stars did, in fact, move, based on star charts from the ancient Greeks. He was even able to show how three stars in particular, Arcturus, Procyon, and Sirius, had shifted position in only a century, between the time of Kepler and his own life. [Pg.177]

This chapter summarizes our experience with this approach and describes some of the critical parameters involved in the preparation of rat neural tissue for LCM, with particular emphasis on protocols applied to the Arcturus Autopix LCM. This instrument has been superceded by more recent models, which are now marketed and distributed by MDS Analytical Technologies (http // www.moleculardevices.com). The principles described here, however, are applicable to tissue preparation for most LCM instruments. We describe two basic protocols for the isolation of samples of rat brain, first from unstained microdissected regions, and second, from brain cells that express specific antigens identified by immunostaining. In addition, we compare the effects of different fixation conditions on tissue recovery and RNA content using real-time QPCR. [Pg.222]

To determine optimum alcohol fixation conditions for the integrity and recovery of the RNA from the tissue, the extracts from each fixation were column-purified on RNA Arcturus Picopure RNA Isolation Kit , and residual DNA was degraded... [Pg.226]

An interesting passage in Job reads as follows— Oh that my words were now written Oh that they were printed in a book that they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock forever Job xix. 23, 24). This evidently refers to the use of lead sheets as writing material. The Book of Job was not all composed at the same time. It appears to have been finally compiled in the fourth century b.c., but portions of earlier MSS. were undoubtedly incorporated into the text. Astronomers calculate that the curious reference to Arcturus in Job ix. 9 probably dates back to 750 B.c. Even at that date the practice of inscribing on soft metals had already been long established for important documents. It was paralleled in ancient Assyria by the customary habit of writing on clay tablets which were afterwards baked to ensure permanency of the record. [Pg.187]
