Breland, T.A. and Eltun, R. 1999. Soil microbial biomass and mineralization of carbon and nitrogen in ecological, integrated and conventional forage and arable cropping systems. Biology and Fertility of Soils 30 193-201. [Pg.44]

Forage legumes are the most important but they are cycled through the animal to produce animal protein, which is not only inefficient but of little value in an all-arable system. We do not at present have a suitable pulse crop available which can be introduced into an arable system, both to increase nitrogen input and to provide a break between cereals. Even if one were available, the input of nitrogen from one year s growth would be small. [Pg.434]
