T his paper reviews some of the experimental evidence available con-- cerning the radiolysis of the aqueous nitrate system both by continuous and pulsed beams and correlates it with the available evidence on the ultraviolet photolysis of the same system. Since the early experiments demonstrating that ionizing radiation could indeed cause reduction to nitrite, a considerable amount of information has accumulated, much of it originating in the U.S.S.R. during the last decade.
