APPLIED EXTRUSION

Strahm, B. 1998. Fundamentals of polymer science as an applied extrusion tool. Cereal Foods World 43, 621-625. [Pg.99]

Two types of PE foam backer rod, available from Applied Extrusion Technologies, are briefly described. Type HBR XL is for concrete pavements and type HBR is for highway use. The use of a backer rod in the joint, below the surface, limits the depth of sealant placed on top of it, helps prevent excessive sealant use and prolongs sealant service life. The crystalline drug ibuprofen melts at 76°C, so the applied extrusion temperature allowed the incorporation of molten drug into the polymer matrix. Therefore, ibuprofen could be homogeneously dissolved up to values of w reading 20% (due to the high stickiness, no higher solid-state solutions could be produced). [Pg.254]

Mechanical properties of hydrogenated titanium alloys are strongly dependent on the applied stress tensor, especially on its hydrostatic component. This was illustrated by the high-pressure tensile and extrusion tests on the Ti-6Al-2.5Mo-2Cr alloy and the same alloy hydrogenated to a = 0.15 wt.%H. Tests were carried out using the apparatus at the Institute of Metal Physics UD RAS operating at hydrostatic pressures of machine oil to 15 kbax and temperatures to 250°C. [Pg.434]

Extrusion coating is ideal for rods, tube and wire. The article is passed through a paint reservoir and then out via a die, which leaves only the correct thickness of paint in place. There are further techniques suitable for flat articles in sheet or web form. Knife coating is ideal for very thin coats, especially on continuous paper or plastic webs. The knife is either a metal doctor blade or a curtain of high velocity air (an air knife) directed onto the surface and it removes surplus material applied previously. [Pg.623]

Polyethylene coating on ferrous pipes may be applied by means of one of the following processes circular or ring-type head extrusion, side extrusion and wrapping or powder sintering. The commercially available coating systems also differ further in that the extruded polyethylene may be applied in conjunction with various primer/adhesive systems. [Pg.670]

Thermoplastics which are used for corrosion protection can be applied in coatings as thin as 0.025 mm by solution techniques and in excess of 5 mm by extrusion or plastisol dipping. They are used where environmental resistance, chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, sound deadening or cushioning are required. They are used in those market areas that necessitate metallic mechanical strength plus thermoplastic corrosion resistance. [Pg.745]

It is possible with solvents of a particular composition to determine quantitatively the level of stress existing in certain TP products where undesirable or limited fabricated-in stresses exist. The stresses can be residual (internal) stresses resulting from the molding, extrusion, or other process that was used to fabricate the plastic product. Stresses can also be applied such as bending the product. As it has been done for over a half century, the... [Pg.104]
