Kinesiology is the study of human movement. Although it technically is not limited to humans, as an applied science, it almost always is. Kinesiology is primarily concerned with all kinds of physical activity, including competitive sports and activities designed to maintain and improve health. It is a major part of physical rehabilitation and injury prevention, and it can be used to design workstations that are ergonomic and minimize hazards. 

Ergonomics is often referred to as human factors engineering and practical applies knowledge of the strengths and limitations of people to the design of machines and jobs. 

Although the above initiatives provided a comprehensive coverage of the ergonomics recommendations appropriate to each family of equipment covered, within the wider mining context the range of equipment families covered is limited (for example, the principle was not applied to any surface mining equipment). In addition, it is likely that there is scope for updating the work done to ensure it is as applicable and comprehensive at the start of the twenty-first century as it was at the end of the twentieth.
