Applications of Pattern Recognition

The general concept of pattern recognition is applicable to various classification problems in science and technology. Table 1 gives a short list of current pattern recognition applications.

Analytical results of clinical chemistry or neurobiological signals are used as features to characterize diseases- Pattern recognition classifiers can be helpful in medical diagnosis. 

Applications of pattern recognition methods in chemistry are described in Chapters 12 to 20- Main topics in this field are spectral data analysis prediction of properties from molecular structures, and classification of materiaIs- 

Each of these disciplines has adapted the basic methods of pattern recognition to its own specific requirements- Some authors doubt, whether it is possible and wise to speak about pattern recognition as a single discipline C4043. Description of pattern recognition methods in Chapters 2to 11 will be done from the view of chemical applications-

The advent of analytical techniques capable of providing data on a large number of analytes in a given specimen had necessitated that better techniques be employed in the assessment of data quality and for data interpretation. In 1983 and 1984, several volumes were published on the application of pattern recognition, cluster analysis, and factor analysis to analytical chemistry.
