Applications of cellulases

As understanding of the components of the cellulase complex has increased, we can better define the mode of action by which native cellulose is depolymerized. The Ci-Cx model has directed attention to the specific steps in the crystalline cellulose breakdown. The use of nomenclature describing the catalytic function of each specific enzyme should encourage higher standards of purity. The ubiquity of the substrate invites imaginative applications of cellulases. 

Smaller applications of cellulase enzymes from submerged fermentation are in textile biopolishing, deinking and dewatering paper, processing of fruit juice and other beverages, baking, and alcohol production. 

Two emerging applications of cellulase in the pulp and paper industry are in ink removal and water removal [23]. 

One of the most important applications of cellulase systems could be in the production of ethanol from renewable lignocellulose (Li et al. 2009 Zhang et al. 2010). O Figure 7.6 shows an example of a biorefinery for a variety of products, including bioethanol and recyclable materials. In this context, thermostable cellulases are highly desirable cellulose breakdown is carried out at high temperatures (Turner et al. 2007).
