Applications of Aluminium in Contact with Foodstuffs

Aluminium is used in the food industry either in food processing equipment vats, trays, kitchen utensils, cutting equipment, mixers, etc. or in packaging. 

The lacquer thickness varies between 5 and 15 JLm depending on the nature of the foodstuff. It aims at protecting aluminium against prolonged action of aggressive foodsmfifs such as tomato ketchup. In practice, most cans for fruit juice, beer, sodas (beverage cans), etc. are lacquered. 

Thin foil in 1050A, 1100, 1200, 8011, etc. is used for short-term food packaging (household foil). Flexible packaging products are laminated complexes using thin aluminium foil and polymer films, in which aluminium ensures impermeability. 

A great variety of packaging products in aluminium are known food cans, beverage cans, aerosols, flexible tubes, and capsules. Given its very good thermal conductivity and 

Aluminium has no action on brewers yeast and does not alter the fermentation or the taste of beer therefore, it is widely used in breweries [15, 16].
