Effect on detonation. Egerton and Gates01 111 investigated the detonation of mixtures of pentane and acetylene with oxygen and nitrogen mixtures of definite composition, and determined the effect of such factors as composition, nature of diluent gas, pressure, temperature and presence of antiknock compounds. Detonation appeared to occur slightly ahead of the combustion front at ordinary initial temperatures and pressures. Under these conditions the presence of lead tetraethyl or selenium diethyl did not affect the position of detonation. Also, lead tetraethyl was found... [Pg.353]

Measurements of the velocity and position of detonation of acetylene, hydrogen, and pentane with oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and carbon dioxide mixtures at initial pressures up to 6 atmospheres were also made.107 The presence of antiknock compounds was found not to atfect the position of detonation. Lead tetramethyl delayed the rate of combustion of pentane, however.lli8,48... [Pg.354]

Gasoline is a mixture of different compounds. A typical blend contains nearly 200 different hydrocarbons and additives such as antioxidants and antiknock agents. Thirteen of the chemicals commonly found in gasoline (nine hydrocarbons and four additives) are regulated as hazardous substances under CERCLA. Table 18.1 lists the chemicals along with the values of toxicity, water solubility, vapor pressure, and biodegradability.19... [Pg.702]

The only commercial competition for tetraethyllead as an antiknock agent is provided by tetramethyllead and mixed methyl and ethyl lead compounds. In 1960, Ethyl Corporation and E. I. DuPont de Nemours and Company inaugurated the manufacture of tetramethyllead in the U.S.A., and in the same year Mobil Oil Company and Standard of California began the marketing of gasoline containing tetramethyllead. Various mixed methylethyllead compounds and mixtures have been patented and have been supplied commercially since this period 65,113,129),... [Pg.54]

Numerous papers deal with comparative studies of the antiknock properties of Pb(CH3)4 and Pb(C2Hg)4 as well as (CH3)4 nPb(C2H5)n (n = 1 to 3) and mixtures of these compounds in relation to fuel composition and to operating conditions of engines [58, 339, 369, 372,... [Pg.228]

The influence of Pb(C2H5)4 on effects of other fuel additives is examined in [360, 395]. A theoretical study of the distribution of gaseous lead compounds, such as PbO or lead(II) halides in the exhaust gas from the combustion of isooctane-air mixtures containing antiknock additives, appears in [576]. [Pg.229]
