Antiglomerular basement membrane antibodies

In the circulation of the BN rat there is a simultaneous and transient presence of antiglomerular basement membrane antibodies and circulating immune complexes [175]. Another characteristic is a striking increase in total and antigen-specific IgE level [190], which also has been found in Hooded Lister rats [ 191 ], as well as anti-single-stranded DNA antibodies [ 181] in the BN rat. In PVG/C rats [192, 193], mercuric chloride also induced glomerulopathi and antinuclear antibodies directed against non-histone nucleoprotein.

Potential biomarkers for the autoimmune effects of mercury include measurement of antiglomerular basement membrane antibodies, anti-DNA antibodies, serum IgE complexes, and total IgE (Cardenas et al. 1993). Elevated IgE, antiglomerular basement membrane antibodies, and anti-DNA antibodies have been observed in a few persons with exposure to mercury from dental amalgams (Anneroth et al. 1992). Other individuals have also been shown to have elevated anti-DNA or antiglomerular basement membrane antibodies (Cardenas et al. 1993 Langworth et al. 1992b). 

Can be immune complex-mediated, antiglomerular basement membrane antibody-mediated, or associated with antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies. 

A. Antiglomerular basement membrane antibodies Some xenobiotics may induce an immune-type glomerulonephritis associated with the occurrence of antibodies against some constituents of the glomerular basement membrane. These antibodies may be directly responsible for the nephropathy or they may be produced as a consequence of non- specific alterations of the normal glomerular basement membrane lattice.
