In psychiatric practice, chlorpromazine is used in various conditions of psychomotor excitement in patients with schizophrenia, chronic paranoid and also manic-depressive conditions, neurosis, alcohol psychosis and neurosis accompanied by excitement, fear, stress, and insomnia, hi comparison with other neuroleptics, chlorpromazine is unique in that it has an expressed sedative effect. It is sometimes used in anesthesiological practice for potentiating narcosis. It also has moderate anticonvulsant action. The most common synonyms are aminazine, megaphen, largactil, thorazine, prompar, and others. [Pg.86]

BZDs differ considerably in potency, which refers to the milligram dose needed to produce a given clinical effect. These differences are in part due to differences in receptor site affinity. If given in the appropriate dose, any BZD may exert anxiolytic, hypnotic, or anticonvulsant effects. For example, anxiolytic BZDs, such as clorazepate and diazepam, are often used as hypnotics when anxiety is a prominent symptom associated with insomnia. [Pg.242]

Weight gain, gastrointestinal symptoms, hair loss, and tremor are relatively common adverse effects. Sedation, fatigue, dizziness, headache, ataxia, insomnia, and behavioral problems are less frequent than with other anticonvulsants. Hyperammonemia is relatively common, but it is often asymptomatic. Fatal liver failure has an incidence of up to 1 600 in young infants, but is extremely rare in adults. Monitor children for appearance of (or worsening of) cognitive and behavioral side effects associated with anticonvulsants. With caramazepine these can include insomnia, irritability, emotional lability, and impaired task performance. It can be used clinically as an ANTIBACTERIAL, mainly used orally for gut infections. Cinoxate [inn, usan] is a cinnamic acid derivative and can be used in topical sunscreen preparations. [Pg.77]

Zolpidem [ban, inn] (zolpidem tartrate [usanJ Ambien Stilnoct and many other names) is one of the imidazopyridines, and a non-benzodiazepine BENZODIAZEPINE BINDING-SITE AGONIST. Most of its properties are similar to diazepam, but with less ANTICONVULSANT, SEDATIVE and SKELETAL MUSCLE RELAXANT properties. It has HYPNOTIC activity and has been used to treat insomnia, zolpidem tartrate zolpidem. [Pg.296]

Medium-chain triglycerides solubilize 192 mg of clomethizole edisilate in Heminevrin Capsules soft gelatin capsules (60 mg equivalent of clomethiazole). Clomethiazole is an oily viscous liquid as the free base but the edisilate (ethanedisulfonate) salt is a solid. Clomethiazole is a short-acting hypnotic and sedative with anticonvulsant effects, and Heminevrin is indicated for treatment of resdessness and insomnia that accompany alcohol withdrawal. Clomethiazole has a short half-life and low bioavailability due to extensive hepatic hrst-pass metabolism. The dose of Heminevrin is one to four capsules as needed, and the capsules are stored at room temperature. Heminevrin Capsules have been available in the United Kingdom since 1998. [Pg.291]

Phenobarbital is indicated as a hypnotic agent for the shortterm treatment of insomnia, as an anticonvulsant in the treatment of partial and generalized tonic-clonic and cortical focal seizures and in emergency control of certain acute convulsive episodes (e.g., those associated with status epi-lepticus, eclampsia, tetanus, and toxic reactions to strychnine or local anesthetics). [Pg.565]
