Anti-inflammatory action erythromycin

A Role for the Anti-Inflammatory Actions of Erythromycin in Chronic Airway Infection... 

Since erythromycin and its derivatives exhibit several activities including motilin-like activity and anti-inflammatory actions, we expected them to be useful for treatment of systemic inflammatory diseases including chronic lower and upper airway diseases, chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, skin diseases of unknown origin, and autoimmune diseases. These inflammatory diseases are known to be associated with inflammatory cell activity. 

Stronger motilide activity than erythromycin but no bactericidal effects have been developed. Development of new derivatives exhibiting anti-inflammatory actions without bactericidal activity will be needed, because low-dose and long-term erythromycin therapy can induce the formation of macrolide-resistant bacterial strains. We propose new clinical trials with new derivatives for the evaluation of anti-inflammatory effects. The anti-inflammatory effects noted here can be considered to be the third action of macrolides. We expect the anti-inflammatory activity of macrolides to be widely applied in the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases in the future.
