Anion-exchange celluloses [1,518, before references]. DEAE-cellulose is available from Calbiochem. and from Brown Co., Berlin, N.H. 03570 (Selectacel). Tener et al,38a used the following treatment before separation of polynucleotides. The resin is washed with 0.1 N sodium hydroxide and then 0.1 N hydrochloric acid. The cycle is repeated twice and the exchanger (in the chloride form) is washed free of acid with distilled water. Fines are removed by decantation twice.

This report illustrates the importance of using several instrumental methods for the characterization of chemically modified cottons with the majority of specific examples being the anion exchange celluloses prepared non-aqueously. 

Distribution of some substituents in chemically modified cottons can be obtained through depth profiles. For example, conventionally applied fluorochemical finishes are concentrated on the surfaces. The anion exchange cellulose was diethylaminoethylcellulose (fig. 3, DEAEC, Whatman) as the hydrochloride. The modifying group is -OCH2CH2NH(Et)2Cl with chloride as the exchangeable anion. The maximum exchange capacity is 1.0 meq/g, under conditions where pH is less than 10, since the firee amine is a moderate base.
