Genetic mannosidosis has been described in man, Angus cattle and Murray Gray cattle, and is characterized by a deficiency of a-mannosidase leading to storage of excess mannose-rich oligosaccharides in lysosomes. Pathologically, there is vacuolation of reticuloendothelial cells in the liver and lymph nodes, pancreatic exocrine cells, and neurons. Affected cattle are ataxic, uncoordinated, fail to thrive, and die in the first year of life. 

Similar analyses can also be made on other rice varieties, such as Jasmine rice. Authentic samples of typical Jasmine rice and of other rice varieties that can be used to minic Jasmine rice have to be collected and analyzed with a broad range of markers. The next step is performed similar to that described earlier for the establishment of a breed-specific analysis for Aberdeen Angus cattle. 

For the cattle, native breeds were preferred, with Shorthorn, Angus, Devon, Hereford and Welsh Black predominating. The sheep were a mixture, but Texel and Charolais were the most popular terminal sires.

There is also recognition of the potential for organic fibre products, with Treliske based at central Otago.
