The coefficient, p, of the viscosity resisting dislocation motion is the shear stress at the glide plane, x divided by the frequency of momentum transfer, v. The maximum value that x can have is about Coct/47i, and as mentioned above v = 1013/sec for the Al atoms,so p = Coct./47rv = 4x 10 3 Poise.This is comparable to the dislocation viscosity coefficients in other metallic systems. Several other empirical relations for diffusion coefficients have been suggested Olson and Walton (01) have devised a means for estimating diffusion coefficients of organic liquids in water solution from surface-tension measurements. Hill (H5) has proposed a method based on Andrade s theory of liquids which allows for the concentration dependence of the diffusion coefficient in a binary liquid mixture. The formula of Arnold (A2, T6, p. 102) does not seem generally useful inasmuch as it contains two constants ( abnormality factors ) characteristic of the solute and of the solvent. 

The thermomechanical property v can also be used in a calculating procedure similar to that applied for any other classical solution thermodynamic property by applying some fundamental concepts in a suitable treatment. It is, therefore, with a clear conscience that I authorise the English translation. It does not seem superfluous to remark that this book is not elementary, but supposes the reader to have some knowledge of the experimental facts and their explanation. There exist excellent books from which such knowledge can easily be acquired. In Germany Sommerfeld s Atombau und Spektrallinien is much used an English translation has appeared under the title Atomic Structure and Spectral Lines. I should like also to direct attention to Andrade s book, The Structure of the Atom, in which not only the theories but also the experimental methods are explained.
