In 1882 Diesel met Martha Flasche, a German. The couple married in November 1883 and for the remainder of the decade lived in Paris, where they had three children Rudolph, Jr. (b. 1884), Hedy (b. 1885), and Eugen (b. 1889). [Pg.325]

ABSTRACT This article concerns various foundational aspects of the periodic system of the elements. These issues include the dual nature of the concept of an "element" to include element as a "basic substance" and as a "simple substance." We will discuss the question of whether there is an optimal form of the periodic table, including whether the left-step table fulfils this role. We will also discuss the derivation or explanation of the [n + , n] or Madelung rule for electron-shell filling and whether indeed it is important to attempt to derive this rule from first principles. In particular, we examine the views of two chemists, Henry Bent and Eugen Schwarz, who have independently addressed many of these issues. 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. As young men preparing their doctoral dissertations in the mid-1920s, Kirrmann and Prevost were influenced by physicists, especially Abraham and Eugene Bloch, as well as by chemists like Lespieau, Urbain, and Job. 54 Perrin presided over the jury for Kirrmann s thesis defense.55 In characterizing his developing interests and aims,... [Pg.170]

This relation is credited to Svante Arrhenius and is called the Arrhenius temperature dependence. Arrhenius was mainly concerned with thermodynamics and chemical equilibrium. Some time later Michael Polanyi and Eugene Wigner showed that simple molecular arguments lead to this temperature dependence, and this form of the rate is frequently called the Polanyi-Wigner relation. They described chemical reactions as the process of crossing a potential energy surface between reactants and products (see Figure 2-3), where f and... [Pg.30]

Eugene Houdry was born in Domont, France, near Paris, on April 18, 1892. His father owned a successful steel factory, and Eugene enrolled in mechanical engineering at the Ecole des Arts et Metiers in Paris to prepare totakeoverthefamily business. He graduated in 1911 with a gold medal for the best grades of any student in his class. [Pg.30]
