Anchor-Bolt Grouting

When solid blocks or termite caps are used, anchor bolts must be placed in the joints between the blocks. Lintel blocks and grouted top courses allow for more flexible placement. 

L.4.6 All water and foreign materials shall be removed from the anchor bolt sleeves before grouting. 

L.4.7 After the baseplate is installed, the anchor bolt sleeve holes shonld be filled with a nonbonding material or the chosen gront, depending on the user s preference. This shonld be done before the main grouting of the baseplate. 

Qualify by testing. Cast-in anchors recommended. High strength anchor bolts preferred (pre-loaded). Redundant anchors desirable. Avoid grouted-in anchors. Through wall anchors are best.

There are two basic methods by which steel bolts and bars may be anchored into concrete, masonry or brickwork utilising epoxy or polyester resin grouts(5). The first involves inserting a deformed bar or bolt into a preformed or drilled hole into which the resin grout has been poured (Fig. 7.3). 

A Vs-in. thick preformed plain elastomeric pad or fabric pad placed atop the concrete bearing surface or grout pad most economically compensates for any minor surface irregularities. Fully threaded anchor rods can be either cast into the concrete or drilled and grouted into place. An anchor plate can be either bolted or welded to the bottom of the anchor rod to augment uplift capacity in the concrete. If no uplift capacity is required, a swedged rod may be substituted for a threaded one. The swedged rod may be terminated just below the top of the masonry plate and the void filled with a flexible sealant. 

Use EPRI data (EPRI NP-5228, Seismic Verification of Nuclear Plant Equipment Anchorage, Volume 1, Development of Anchorage Guidelines, May 1987) converted to the 2500 psi concrete for cast-in-place and grouted-in-place bolts, expansion, lead shield and lead cinched anchors. Use safety factors of 3 and 4 for non-shell and shell expansion anchors, respectively. Use 1973 AISC Code (Manual of Steel Construction, 7th Edition) requirements for steel connecting members and bolts. Use ACI Standard 349-85 (Code Requirements for Nuclear Safety Related Concrete Structures, 1985) for concrete evaluation.
