Analytical trinity

In contrast to classical analysis, the concept of modern analytical chemistry has changed in so far as the problem that has to be solved is included in the analytical process. The analytical chemist is considered as a problem solver (Lucchesi [1980]) and the concept is represented in the form of the analytical trinity (Betteridge [1976]) as shown in Fig. 1.2.

Highlights There are not many published examples of analysis of postdetonation debris. The reported results from the 1945 Trinity test show that information on the core and constituents of the device can be derived from advanced analytical techniques, with repercussions for nuclear forensics analysis. 

In pharmaceutical formulations, the most commonly used counterions are sodium and chloride ions. While no other reversed-phase column can retain or separate them, the Acclaim Trinity PI column overcomes this challenge by providing excellent separations and peak shapes for both analytes (see Figure 6.89). However, this requires a nonspecific detection method, because both ions are nonchromophoric and cannot be detected simultaneously by suppressed... 

The four Acclaim Mixed-Mode columns mentioned in Section 6.7.2 - Acclaim Mixed-Mode WAX-1, Acclaim Mixed-Mode WCX-1, Acclaim Trinity PI, and Acclaim Trinity P2 - can also be used under HILIC conditions. Acclaim Mixed-Mode WAX-1 and Acclaim Mixed-Mode WCX-1 are based on an alkyl chain with terminal ion-exchange functional groups. Because of this column chemistry, both columns offer multiple retention mechanisms, including ion exchange, reversed phase, and HILIC. As an example. Figure 7.7 demonstrates that in highly organic mobile phase. Acclaim Mixed-Mode WCX-1 can serve as a HILIC column. Hydrophilic analytes such as cytosine elute later than naphthalene as a hydrophobic neutral analyte. 

Analogously, Figure 6.88 in Section 6.7.2 illustrated the separation of 1,1-dimethylbiguanide (Metformin) and its chloride counterion at four different acetonitrile levels on Acclaim Trinity PI. 1,1-Dimethylbiguanide hydrochloride is a highly hydrophilic, basic antidiabetic drug that reduces blood glucose levels and improves insulin sensitivity.
