An Introduction to Alternatives

A few remarks are in order in support of some of the alternatives previously listed and commented upon. These remarks do not constitute recommendations or even suggestions, but are intended for consideration only. It may be stated again that anticancer action does not necessarily constitute a cure, remission being the preferred word. 

attention can be drawn to such therapies as megadoses of vitamin C, Essiac tea, shark cartilage, and elimination of parasitic invaders. More will be further described in the subsequent sections. We particularly recall the works of Ralph W. Moss (1992, 1998), Cancer Therapy The Independent Consumer s Guide to Non-Toxic Treatment and Prevention and Herbs against Cancer History and Controversy, both of which furnish the pros and cons. 

As for vitamin B and C deflciencies and cancer. The Complete Book of Vitamins, by J.I. Rodale et al., published back in 1966, mentions the Gerson diet in the treatment of cancer and the importance of the liver (Rodale et al., 1966, pp. 450-509). 

The role and efficacy of plants and herbs and of alternative medicine will be discussed in the following text. It may be commented, however, that medical orthodoxy will remain skepticaL if not hostile, unless biochemical (or biological) explanations can be provided for the beneficial action of these altemative therapies. (This is further complicated by matters of financial reward and of saving face.) But even here, these biochemical explanations are not necessarily the last word. 

Nevertheless, theories or hypotheses furnish a means to more closely relate cause and effect, which are often separated by a very long time interval in the case of cancer, thus introducing ambiguities and speculations. That is, the cause, or causes, of cancer and its subsequent onset cannot necessarily be related, at least by observation alone. Also, the cancer occurrence and its remission or cure cannot usually
