Characteristics of the coals are summarised in Table I. The reactors were of the tubing bomb type and the initial (cold) hydrogen pressure was 7 MPa. A sulphided Mo catalyst was introduced to the coal by impregnation from an aqueous solution of ammonium tetrathiomolybdate. 

Illinois 6 coal (1.0 g) was impregnated with ammonium tetrathiomolybdate (0.20 g, 0.77 mmol) in 10 mL of water at 250°C fw 30 minutes. For the mixed metals, 0.385 mmol of metal salt was added. 

Similar materials were used by Skeldon et al to produce a self-lubricating surface film on aluminium. They first produced a porous alumina film on the surface by anodizing, and then re-anodized in an electrolyte containing 0.01 M ammonium tetrathiomolybdate. They then found that the pores of the primary anodized film contained mainly amorphous molybdenum trisulphide, and this was converted by vacuum annealing to hexagonal molybdenum disulphide. The film gave a marked improvement in wear resistance. 

The specific reaction ( activation ) conditions for the conversion of catalyst precursors to unsupported catalysts have a direct effect on the catalytic activity and dispersion. The importance of reaction intermediates in decomposition of ammonium heptamolybdate and ammonium tetrathiomolybdate, and the sensitivity of these intermediates to reaction conditions, were studied in coal liquefaction systems. Recent results indicate that optimization of activation conditions facilitates the formation of a highly dispersed and active form of molybdenum disulfide for coal liquefaction. The use of the catalyst precursors ammonium heptamolybdate, ammonium tetrathiomolybdate, and molybdenum trisulflde for the conversion of coal to soluble products will be discussed.

Ammonium tetrathiomolybdate can be used as a chelator of copper in Wilson s disease.

The surfactants Bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate sodium salt [dioctylsulfosuccinate sodium salt or AOT] (99 % purity), polyoxyethylene(5)nonylphenylether [Igepal CO 520 or NP-5] (99% purity), as well as ammonium tetrathiomolybdate [ATTM] (99.97 % purity) were purchased from Aldrich. The other chemicals used were obtained as follows n-heptane (purity > 99 %) was from Prolabo and sulfuricaAcid (purity > 97 %) from Merck. 

Molybdenum sulfide nanoparticles were prepared by adding via a syringe 6.9 mL of a 0.005 M ammonium tetrathiomolybdate (ATTM) solution to a 0.1 M AOT/ n-heptane/ 0.5 M sulfuric acid microemulsion system with a water-to-surfactant molar ratio w of 20.
