Refrigerants ammonia

The density of a vapour or gas at eonstant pressure is proportional to its relative moleeular mass and inversely proportional to temperature. Sinee most gases and vapours have relative moleeular masses greater than air (exeeptions inelude hydrogen, methane and ammonia), the vapours slump and spread or aeeumulate at low levels. The greater the vapour density, the greater the tendeney for this to oeeur. Gases or vapours whieh are less dense than air ean, however, spread at low level when eold (e.g. release of ammonia refrigerant). Table 6.1 ineludes vapour density values. [Pg.180]

Voids and Honti (1974) described the incident. A carbon dioxide purification plant in Rdpcelak, Hungary, produced carbon dioxide from natural sources. It was liquefied and supercooled after purification by ammonia refrigeration, then stored in tanks under a pressure of 15 bar (220 psi) at a temperature of — 30°C ( —22°F). [Pg.27]

Weisman and Pei also applied their approach to DNB tests with fluids other than water. Without any revision of the approach derived for water, good predictions were obtained for DNB data from systems using liquid nitrogen, anhydrous ammonia, Refrigerant-113, and Refrigerant-11 (see Sec. 5.3.4.2). [Pg.368]

As mentioned, RMP addresses specific chemicals/materials (compounds) it addresses the accidental release of over one hundred chemical substances. Of the RMP chemicals listed, seventy-seven include acutely toxic chemical compounds and sixty-three flammable gases. Threshold quantity levels range from 500 pounds to 20,000 pounds. USEPA estimates that approximately 100,000+ sources are covered by the rule. The universe includes chemical and most other manufacturers, certain wholesalers and retailers, drinking-water systems, wastewater treatment works, ammonia refrigeration systems, chemical wholesalers and end users, utilities, propane retailers, and federal facilities. [Pg.73]

At a site in New Iberia, Louisiana, freezeWALL installed a ground freezing system 240 ft below ground surface, intended to freeze an area of 3600 ft. This system used a trailer-mounted ammonia refrigeration plant and 58 freeze pipes located 6 ft apart. The duration of freezing is to last 35 months, and the contract amount was 6 million (D19593B, p. 2). [Pg.599]

Calculations of the energy requirement for the process, if it is carried out in a continuous manner, indicate that the efficiency would only be about one tenth that of the familiar ammonia refrigeration cycle, unless the energy released when the melted ice is decompressed could be efficiently recovered. Achievement of the latter in actual practice requires invention of some practical mechanical arrangements. [Pg.58]

There has been some innovative technology applied by some wineries to maintain the wines in a warm condition. Several wineries have been visited where small tanks, puncheons, or barrels were covered with electric blankets to maintain an adequate temperature for the malo-lactic fermentation. Larger wineries utilize an external heat source to warm the storage tanks in which the red wine is held. Where wineries are using ammonia refrigeration systems directly in the jacketed portion of the fermentors, these systems can be used as a heat pump. The hot ammonia gas from the compressors is desuperheated and the tank jacket used as a condenser to condense this gaseous ammonia. This has proven to be a very effective means of warming a tank. [Pg.177]
