The basic flow sheet for the flotation-concentration of nonsulfide minerals is essentially the same as that for treating sulfides but the family of reagents used is different. The reagents utilized for nonsulfide mineral concentrations by flotation are usually fatty acids or their salts (RCOOH, RCOOM), sulfonates (RSO M), sulfates (RSO M), where M is usually Na or K, and R represents a linear, branched, or cycHc hydrocarbon chain and amines [R2N(R)3]A where R and R are hydrocarbon chains and A is an anion such as Cl or Br . Collectors for most nonsulfides can be selected on the basis of their isoelectric points. Thus at pH > pH p cationic surfactants are suitable collectors whereas at lower pH values anion-type collectors are selected as illustrated in Figure 10 (28). The chemical resistance of the linear polymers is also very good. Resistant to most acids, aqueous bases, hydrocarbons, most halogenated hydrocarbons, alcohols and phenols, they are attacked by concentrated sulphuric acid, formic acid, some amines, benzaldehyde, nitromethane and a few other reagents. They will dissolve in 1-chloronaphthalene at elevated temperatures but in general have excellent solvent resistance. The polymer is cross-linked by air oxidation at elevated temperatures. [Pg.594]

Hydro-de-diazoniation seems to be an unnecessary reaction from the synthetic standpoint, as arenediazonium salts are obtained from the respective amines, reagents that are normally synthesized from the hydrocarbon. Some aromatic compounds, however, cannot be synthesized by straightforward electrophilic aromatic substitution examples of these are the 1,3,5-trichloro- and -tribromobenzenes (see below). These simple benzene derivatives are synthesized from aniline via halogenation, diazotization and hydro-de-diazoniation. The reaction with disubstituted formamides and phosphorus oxychloride, called the Vilsmeier or the Vilsmeier-Haack reaction,is the most common method for the formylation of aromatic rings. However, it is applicable only to active substrates, such as amines and phenols. An intramolecular version is also known.Aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocycles can also be formylated, but only if they are much more active than benzene (e.g., azulenes, ferrocenes). Though A-phenyl-A-methyl-formamide is a common reagent, other arylalkyl amides and dialkyl amides are also used. Phosgene (COCI2) has been used in place of POCI3.
