This compound, the hexa-hydro pyridine has just been referred to, and also previously, in connection with penta-methylene di-amine (p. 194). In both these connections its constitution has been established. As its name indicates, it is obtained from pepper in which it is present in amide combination with an acid known as piperic acid. The compound thus formed is the alkaloid of black pepper and is called pipeline. 

We find a similar situation in the case of many amide-like compoimds. For the amides of monobasic acids, the rule of Strecker as well as that of Gerhardt leads to a basicity of zero. On the other hand, it has been known for some time, that many amides combine directly with a number of metallic oxides, thus behaving as monobasic acids. In the case of acetamide, Strecker himself recently demonstrated this behavior. 

From the several coupling possibilities investigated, diesters of methylene diol and ethylene 1,2-diol proved worthy of further investigation, but ester-amide combinations did not prove successful. Consequently, the diesters have also been investigated in rabbits and dogs (297). 

Ammonia, a soft nucleophile for being neutral, reacts with methyl acrylate 100 in methanol in conjugate manner to give the primary amine 101. The reaction continues in the same sense and the secondary amine 102 and the tertiary amine 103 are formed successively [39]. It is to be noted that ammonia, and other primary and secondary amines, do not react with simple esters to form amides. Combine this with the known observation that attack at the carbonyl group is irreversible and also rate determining [40], the above conjugate addition must necessarily be a product of kinetic control, supported by HOMO-LUMO interaction.

A modified form of epoxy is known as coal-tar epoxy coating. This consists of a two package epoxy-amide combination with the addition of coal-tar pitch to either the amide or epoxy portion.
