American wire gauge

The specification of wires can be confusing. All wires diameters are based upon the American Wire Gauge (AWG) table, published in the early 20th century. The metric countries directly converted these dimension (inches) to millimeters and created what is now the lEC R20 wire table. This is shown below in both measurement systems in Table F-t. 

The thickness of wire often is measured using a system called the American Wire Gauge (AWG) standard. The smaller the gauge number, the larger the diameter of the wire. For example, 18-gauge copper wire has a diameter of about 0.102 cm 12-gauge copper wire has a diameter of about 0.205 cm. Such small diameters are difficult to measure accurately with a metric ruler. In this experiment, you will plot measurements of mass and volume to find the density of copper. Then, you will use the density of copper to confirm the gauge of copper wire.

AMERICAN WIRE GAUGE (AWG) - A system used in the United States for measuring the size of solid wires. 

The abbreviation for American Wire Gauge the standard for gauging the size of wires (electrical conductors). 

Medial prefrontal and orbitofrontal regions are known to be associated with reward circuits. The HI and H2 coils are designed to stimulated deep prefrontal structures, with minimal undesired side effects such as pain, motor stimulation, and facial muscles activation. The coils are wounded with a double 14 AWG (American Wire Gauge) insulated cupper wire winded into several windings, connected in series. Detailed illustration of the wiring pattern of HI is shown in Figure 37.13, and of H2 is shown in Figure 37.14. 

The diameter of a wire is sometimes referred to by its American wire gauge number. A 16-gauge wire has a diameter of 0.0582 in. Reference tables list resistivity and conductivity of various materials. Equation (12-2) shows that resistivity and conductivity are reciprocals, with conductivity the more commonly used property. Table 12-1 gives resistivity for selected American wire gauge copper wire sizes.

Thermocouple Size. Many factors can confound the solder-joint temperature measurement process, regardless of whether the thermocouple bead is properly deployed between lead and pad. Among these are the size of the bead and the thermal mass of the thermocouple assembly. In general, the use of finer-gauge thermocouples such as 30 to 36 American Wire Gauge (AWG) (see Table 47.1) is recommended. This will permit insertion between lead and pad even at very fine lead and pad pitches. Ideally the thermocouple bead will be completely within the solder joint to be measured. 

The cable protection method, conduit, cable tray, or bare exposed, depends on many design considerations. Cables require no basic maintenance except to assure that they are not applied beyond their ampacity. Cable and wire ampacities are published in the National Electrical Code and by the manufacturers who make cables. All cables used for normal electrical usage are sized in the United States in accordance with the American Wire Gauge (AWG) or circular mils.
