No studies so far have shown that the use of ipecac in the management of acute oral poisoning modifies patient s clinical outcome and because they can lead to complications and prolonged hospital course, the ipecac carries no role in the routine toxicology management. There may be some acceptable benefit-to-risk in using ipecac but only in rare situations, as found in consensus guideline prepared by the American Association of Poison Control Centers.

In general, SSRI doses of 50 to 75 times the common daily doses result in minor symptoms. Higher doses cause serious symptoms of seizure, arrhythmias, and decreased consciousness only doses greater than 150 times the common daily therapeutic dose can result in death (Barbey and Roose, 1998). Overdose in combination with alcohol or other drugs increases toxicity and accounts for most fatalities involving the SSRIs. Nevertheless, compared to TCA medications, which annually results in 100 to 150 fatal overdoses reported to the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC), the SSRI agents accounted for only 16 fatal overdoses reported to that organization between 1987 and 1996 (Barbey and Roose, 1998). 

The popularity of botanical products in the United States is reflected in a survey on complementary and alternative medicine that showed that American consumers had spent an estimated 5.1 billion on botanical products in 1997 (1). In the same year, the global market for botanical medicinal products was estimated to be approximately 20 billion (2,3). It has been estimated that currently more than 1500 botanical products are available in the U.S. market alone (4). This popularity has been fueled, in part, by the perception that botanicals are naturally derived products, and hence are safe and devoid of adverse effects. This perception appeared to be justified by a paper summarizing the fatality of pharmaceutical drugs and botanical products in the 1981-1993 period, in which statistics compiled by the National Center for Health Statistics, the American Association of Poison Control Centers, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission showed an annual mortality rate of 100,000 deaths...
