Illite and montmorillonite are similar in structure and differ slightly from kaolinite in this regard. The first two are composed of two silicon-oxygen layers per octahedral layer containing iron, magnesium and aluminum and in kaolinite the ratio of tetrahedral and octahedral layers is 1. In the case of orthoclase, a more subtle approach is needed. Aside from the potassium atoms, all of the silicon, aluminum, and oxygen atoms form a covalently bonded network in which the positions and bond angles are likely to be highly correlated. For a specular reflectivity measurement, the heights of each of these atoms must be specified separately, and 13 parameters are needed to specify the vertical silicate structure for a single unit cell.
