In the composition of heterobimetallic REM compounds, besides Li and Na, aluminium and gallium can be included. Several compounds of such a type (Table 1.14) have been obtained by Lappert and coworkers [225, 226] according to the reaction  [Pg.94]

Permethylsamarocene partially displaces Al in Et3Al to give Sm/Al complex [229] (Me5C5)2Sm + excess EtjAl — (Me5C5)2Sm(p.-Et)2AlEt2 + Al [Pg.94]

In the case of MejAl the same reaction affords dimeric product (Me5C5)2Sm[(ii-Me)Al-Me2( LL-Me)]2Sm(C5Me5)2, which in toluene solution exists in equilibrium with its monomeric form [180]. [Pg.94]

The methyl complexes dissolve in methylene chloride, toluene and benzene, but ethyl derivatives are sparingly soluble in alkanes. Reduced solubility of Sm and Gd complexes in toluene, in the authors opinion, shows some increase in the ionicity of such compounds from heavy to early lanthanoids [226]. Due to the low solubility in methylene chloride the attempts to isolate the samarium complex in analytically pure state have failed. The thermal stability of methyl complexes is rather high. Almost all compounds melt without decomposition in the temperature range 110-140°C, but the scandium and yttrium compounds may be sublimed in vacuum. The ethyl derivatives are less stable. They decompose with a notable rate even at room temperature. [Pg.94]

The infra red spectra of bridging methyl complexes are practically identical, just as the spectra of ethyl analogues. It allows to use IR spectroscopy for identification of new bridging alkyl lanthanoid complexes. We are all exposed to aluminium from the metal utensils we use and also from the occasional use of medicinal preparations such as antacids, but it is poorly absorbed and the risk is probably very small.
