While grooves or ribs are used on most beaches it is unusual to use a liner. However in extreme cases of erosion, a beach liner of say Stellite with its own Stellite ribs is used. Alternatively the beach can be covered with small carbide or alumina tiles like a Roman mosaic. Tiles of two different thicknesses allow the formation of in-built ribs or grooves as desired. [Pg.64]

WulffProcess. The regenerative technique is best exemplified by the Wulff process, Hcensed by Union Carbide Corp. The furnace consists basically of two masses of high purity alumina refractory tile having cylindrical channels for gas flow and separated by a central combustion space as shown in Figure 10. Its cychc operation has four distinct steps, each of approximately 1 min in duration, the sequence being pyrolysis and heat in one direction followed by pyrolysis and heat in the other direction. The traditional or conventional ceramics are generally in monolithic form. These include bricks, pottery, tiles and a variety of art objects. The advanced or high-performance monolithic ceramic materials represent a new and improved class of ceramic materials where, frequently, some sophisticated chemical processing route is used to obtain them. Generally, their characteristics are based on the high quality and purity of the raw materials used. Examples of these high-performance ceramics include oxides, nitrides, carbides of silicon, aluminium, titanium and zirconium, alumina, etc. [Pg.58]

A mixture of 13 (4.5 g, 10.5 mmol), PhHgCF, (4.0 g, 11.5 mmol) and Nal (5.2 g, 34.5 mmol) in benzene (50 mL) was heated at reflux under an atmosphere of N,. Brick clays tend to be high in alkalis and iron, but low in alumina [14], The clays usually have moderate to high plasticity, which facilitates forming [25], Often, brick clays are actually shales [14], These clays fire at moderate temperatures (cone 1-5) and the resulting fired bodies are dark red. Clays with similar properties but different colors upon firing can be used to produce other products such as sewer tile and roofing tile [6], Nearly any red burning clay can be classified as brick clay. [Pg.123]

Case 2 Roofs, Walls, Burner Tiles If combustion gases are directed toward or across these surfaces, they become more porous, lose strength, slump, and even melt. Very dense refractories should be used at least near the surfaces exposed to gases hotter than zone temperature. Generally, a higher percentage of alumina makes a refractory more dense, and therefore less subject to the above problems. Strict attention to refractory installation instructions will minimize these problems. For burner tile installation, refer to the Appendix. [Pg.405]
