Effect of Catalyst The catalysts used in hydrotreating are molybdena on alumina, cobalt molybdate on alumina, nickel molybdate on alumina or nickel tungstate. Which catalyst is used depends on the particular application. Cobalt molybdate catalyst is generally used when sulfur removal is the primary interest. The nickel catalysts find application in the treating of cracked stocks for olefin or aromatic saturation. One preferred application for molybdena catalyst is sweetening, (removal of mercaptans). The molybdena on alumina catalyst is also preferred for reducing the carbon residue of heating oils. [Pg.67]

Mix 0.01 M dimethyltryptamine, 0.02 M phosphate buffer pH 7.2 containing 5 mM ascorbic acid, 0.02 M disodium EDTA and 0.01 M ferrous sulfate (CuCI may substitute) and add with stirring at 20-22° 0.02 M H202 (0.01 M may increase yield). Supported Nickel. - The interaction of nickel with siUca and alumina at various stages of catalyst preparation has been extensively studied and only some recent evidence for interaction and its effect on performance are noted here. Nickel nitrate impregnated on silica decomposed to NiO during calcination, which interacted little with the support, whereas the ESCA spectrum of low nickel loadings on 7-alumina were quite different and NiO only appeared once the surface sites were filled. After reduction at 673 K and examination by ESCA without exposure to air, it was shown that percentage reduction depended on both Ni content and calcination temperature, which was considered indicative of a strong interaction between nickel and alumina. Nickel ions in octahedral sites are readily reduced and increasing the calcination temperature makes them diffuse to tetrahedral sites where they are difficult to reduce. [Pg.64]
