Alternative cracking mechanisms

Concrete and fiberglass vaults are often used, although they can be subject to environmentally induced cracks. Soil and clay liners are not allowed. Flexible hner systems have been developed that may be a cost-effective and environmentally sound alternative. State-of-the-art liner technology has overcome many of the previous problems with seams, low mechanical strength, and chemical resistance. [Pg.2308]

While lead of purity in excess of 99.99% is commercially available, it is very rarely used owing to its susceptibility to grain growth and fatigue failure by intercrystalline cracking, and indifferent mechanical properties. Because of its generally superior corrosion resistance, pure lead to BS 334 1982 type A, shown in Table4.13, is occasionally used in chemical plant, but only if there is no suitable alternative. [Pg.720]

Certain types of corrosion are selective. Thus, corrosion cracking is observed primarily in the case of alloys and only when these are in contact with particular media. Corrosion is often enhanced by various extraneous effects. Stress corrosion cracking can occur under appreciable mechanical loads or internal stresses corrosion fatigue develops under prolonged cyclic mechanical loads (i.e., loads alternating in sign). [Pg.380]

An alternative method to position two electrodes at nanometer distances apart is the mechanically-controlled, break junction (MCBJ) technique. An ultra-thin, notched Au wire on a flexible substrate can be broken reliably by pushing on the Au with a piezoelectric piston, cracking the Au (Fig. 4). This produces a gap between the Au shards whose size can be finely varied to 1 A by a piston or control rod [46, 47]. When UE molecules with thiol groups on both ends are present in a surrounding solution, the gap can be adjusted until the molecules can span it. A dilute solution means the number of spanning molecules will be small, and the least-common-multiple of current flow among many junctions indicates those spanned by a single molecule [47]. [Pg.47]

This bimolecular mechanism also applies to cycloalkanes which can be activated by intermolecular hydride transfer to small carbenium ions to form cyclohexyl cations prior to cracking. Alternately, the cyclohexyl cations can deprotonate and form cyclohexene. With two similar intermolecular hydride transfers an aromatic can also form [46]. [Pg.456]

In a 2 L round bottomed flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer there was added 200 mL cracked ice, 45 inL of concentrated H2S04, 26.7 g of still moist 3-ethyl-4-methoxybenzenesulfonyl chloride, and 45 g elemental zinc dust. With external heating, an exothermic reaction set in and the temperature was maintained at reflux conditions for 4 h. After cooling to room temperature, the reaction mixture was filtered and the insolubles washed alternately with H20 and with CH2C12. The... [Pg.455]
