Allylic series

All allylic derivatives are relatively hepatotoxic and irritant. Allylic alcohol itself serves to create experimental hepatic lesions that allow testing hepatoprotecting drugs. We will envisage three categories of allylic derivatives C-allyl derivatives, Af-allyl derivatives, and 0-and 5-allyl derivatives which often possess alkylating properties. 

Acetamidoeugenol is an intravenous anesthetic of ultra-short duration of action, it has been withdrawn because it provokes irritations and lesions of the vascular wall. Acetamidoeugenol is oxidized very rapidly in vivo into the corresponding aryl-acetic acid. This observation was the basis of the synthesis of another intravenous short-acting anesthetic such as propanilide.  

Compound AL-438, a non-steroidal selective glucocorticoid modulator, is a potent anti-inflammatory agent (in the same range as prednisolone). This 5-allyl compound 

Several of these compounds are listed in the Merck Index. The 3-blocking oxprenolol, the arylacetic analgesic-anti-inflammatory drug aclofenac and the fungicide enilco-nazole are 0-aUyl derivatives. Penicillin O and penicillin S are both S-allyl derivatives.

In this sense the substances composing this series are non-saturated, but they are not so in the sense that they contain C or other atoms whose valences are not satisfied. The following-formulsB indicate the constitution of the substances of this series, and their relation to those of the previous one. It will be observed that in the allyl compounds, two neighboring C atoms, exchange two valences
