Allyl disulphide

Allyl disulphide (diallyl disulphide) [2179-57-9] M 146.3, 58-59°/5mm, b 79-81°/20mm, 138-139°/atm, d 1.01, no 1-541. Purified by fractional distn until their molar refractivities are in uniformly good agreement with the calculated values [JACS 69 1710 7947]. Also purified by gas chromatography [retention times JOC 2A 175 1959 UV JCS 395 7949].

Of the several applications of the desulphurization of disulphides, that of alkyl allyl disulphides seems particularly interesting. From the evidence cited it would seem that these disulphides readily rearrange to thiosulphoxides (26) which are desulphurized by the phosphine. Treatment of 3-chlorothietan with potassium thiophenoxide or potassium thiobutoxide gave phenyl or n-butyl allyl disulphide. The thietan ring in a tricyclic system is opened in various reactions. While most cyclic sulphides give ylides on treatment with dimethyl diazomalonate, thietan gave 26% of ring-expanded product (165). In the absence of copper sulphate a polymer was obtained. "...

Allyl-propyl disulphide, (C3H5)S. S. (C3H7), exists to the extent of about 5 per cent, in garlic oil. It is a bright yellow oil of foul odour, having a specific gravity 1-023 and boiling at 66° to 69° at 16 mm. pressure.

Allylic nitro compounds are reduced by carbon disulphide under mild basic catalytic conditions to yield the conjugated oximes (Scheme 11.7) [8]. The reaction is sensitive to the amount of base used, and benzyltriethylammonium chloride appears to be a better catalyst than tetra-n-butylammonium bromide or hydrogen sulphate. Saturated nitro compounds are not reduced under these conditions. 

The essential oil, which is present in the fresh bulb in a concentration of 0.1 to 0.3%, contains diallyl sulphide, diallyl trisulphide and allyl methyl disulphide (derivatives of allicin) as main components. Apart from further allyl polysulphides, the steam distilled oil contains limonene as non-sulphurous component [111]. The high pungency of garlic oil makes it necessary to dilute it, commonly in vegetable oil. One gram of oil is equivalent to 900 g of fresh garlic or 200 g of dehydrated garlic powder [112].
