Oxidation-resistant high temperature alloys

The outlook for NbAl3 as an oxidation-resistant high-temperature structural alloy or coating is poor. Recent alloy development efforts related to NbAl3 have been directed towards its incorporation as a minor phase in a multiphase alloy (see review by Sauthoff (1995c) and also Section 6.8 for further details). [Pg.833]

High Temperature Properties. There are marked differences in the abihty of PGMs to resist high temperature oxidation. Many technological appHcations, particularly in the form of platinum-based alloys, arise from the resistance of platinum, rhodium, and iridium to oxidation at high temperatures. Osmium and mthenium are not used in oxidation-resistant appHcations owing to the formation of volatile oxides. High temperature oxidation behavior is summarized in Table 4. [Pg.164]

Valve Trim Various alloys are available for valve parts such as seats, disks, and stems which must retain smooth finish For successful operation. The problem in seat materials is fivefold (1) resistance to corrosion by the fluid handled and to oxidation at high temperatures, (2) resistance to erosion by suspended solids in the fluid, (3) prevention of galling (seizure at point of contact) by differences in material or hardness or Both, (4) maintenance of high strength at high temperature, and (5) avoidance of distortion. [Pg.970]

Steel alloyed with 1% A1 is more resistant to oxidation at high temperatures. The macro- and microscopic homogeneity of the distribution of all elements is better for powder metallurgical, hot isostatically pressed steels. Combining these advantages should result in better performance of high-speed steels. [Pg.121]

Nickel and Ni-Cr alloys are among the most resistant metallic materials to corrosion and oxidation at high temperatures and are widely used to resist corrosion by gases and molten salts at elevated temperatures (see Sections 7.1 and 7.5). [Pg.795]

Compared with ferritic carbon and low-alloy steels, relatively little information is available in the literature concerning stainless steels or nickel-base alloys. From the preceding section concerning low-alloy steels in high temperature aqueous environments, where environmental effects depend critically on water chemistry and dissolution and repassivation kinetics when protective oxide films are ruptured, it can be anticipated that this factor would be of even more importance for more highly alloyed corrosion-resistant materials. [Pg.1306]

Platinum has a high resistance to oxidation at high temperature. One of its main uses has been, in the form of an alloy with copper, in the manufacture of the spinnerets used in synthetic textile spinning processes. [Pg.301]

The most imporant use of cobalt is in the manufacture of various wear-resistant and superalloys. Its alloys have shown high resistance to corrosion and oxidation at high temperatures. They are used in machine components. Also, certain alloys are used in desulfurization and hquefaction of coal and hydrocracking of crude oil shale. Cobalt catalysts are used in many industrial processes. Several cobalt salts have wide commercial apphcations (see individual salts). Cobalt oxide is used in glass to impart pink or blue color. Radioactive cobalt-60 is used in radiography and sterihzation of food. [Pg.231]
