Allopathic medicines

There is a sufficient degree of dilution to guarantee the safety of the medicinal product (not more than one in 10000 of the mother tincture or 1/lOOth of the smallest dose requiring a medical prescription for an allopathic medicinal product). 

Zimbabwe has mles regarding the practice of traditional medicine, but not for registration of traditional medicinal products. In future, however, the Medicines control agency can be expected to exert some control over this category of product. In Cypms, there are no legislative provisions for herbal, dietary or homeopathic medicines, but some herbal medicines are registered as allopathic medicines.

A point to note is that different medical systems such as traditional Chinese medicine. Ayurvedic medicine, and traditional African medicine and homeopathic medicine have different standards by which they judge adverse reactions, as compared with Western allopathic medicine. This may lead to controversy and confusion amongst patients and health professionals alike communications must take this into account. 

Animals have been used as models for the demonstration of action of potentized homeopathic medicines. If homeopathic medicines act on human patients they must act on animals. In allopathic medicine, animals particularly rats, mice, hamsters,... 

Therapeutic drug monitoring is an essential component of safe prescribing. It is necessary to be aware that many herbal medicines can affect laboratory tests (e.g. chan su, dan shen, St John s wort, kava kava, chaparral, germander and allopathic medicines, which are adulterants of herbal preparations). 

According to the chemical structure, the anxiolytic agents used in allopathic medicine may be divided into three classes carbamate of propanodiol and related compounds, BZDs and several others compounds. The most effective are the BDZs Chlordiazepoxide, Fig. (3), which was commercialized in 1960 as a therapeutic innovation for the treatment of anxiety. As from the identification of its property, dozens of new BDZs derivates were commercialized, including diazepam. Fig. (3), one of the medicines most prescribed worldwide. 

Figure 2 shows the number of annual registrations of allopathic medicines which, except in 1994, is growing continuously.

By the late 1880s and early 1890s, the use of saw palmetto in eclectic, homeopathic, and allopathic medicine had become widespread. The berries were listed in the official medical literature starting in the 1890s they were first listed in the 17th edition of the U.S. Dispensatory in 1894 and continued to be listed until the 25th edition in 1955. The berries were official in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia from 1906 to 1916 and then in the National Formulary from 1926 to 1950. 

In the U.S. and other technologically developed countries, allopathic medicine is the dominant healing paradigm which perpetuates a "culture" of synthetic pharmaceuticals. 

Many herbal preparations that are widely used to treat anxiety states in non-allopathic or allopathic medicine are also employed, but at significantly higher doses, to induce sedation. In these cases herbal preparations used to treat anxiety are likewise employed when inducing sleep is clinically indicated to relieve insomnia or other symptoms of distress or fatigue. However, certain preparations selectively function as anxiolytics without causing sedation, while others cause sedation to an extent that makes their use as anxiolytic agents inappropriate or unsafe. 

Surprises also await a curious mind in the world of homeopathic remedies that have effects proven by placebo controlled, randomized, clinical double blind studies. Plant-derived products containing a mother tinctme or a solution of D1 poten-tization often feature detectable amounts of active ingredients. Chasteberry (Vitex agnus-castus) is used in both homeopathic and conventional (allopathic) medicines. The two different kinds of products contain just about the same amount of the same active ingredient (called casticin Fig. 3.14 shows analysis results) and their therapeutic recommendation is identical (managing the premenstrual stress syndrome). 

In the early 1900 s, osteopathic medicine increasingly incorporated the practices of allopathic medicine, while retaining the whole-person approach and manipulation techniques.
