Monolayers of cationic particles 2 show an analogous dependence on the salt concentration of the subphase (Fig. 6b). If particles 2 are spread on a neutral subphase without any salt present, they mainly disappear into the subphase due to the large hydrophiUcity of the shell. However, if KCl is added, electrostatic shielding of the alkylammonium groups by the chloride ions sets in, the hydrophilicity of the particle shell is diminished, and a stable monolayer is obtained. The incorporation of an alkylammonium group can readily be achieved, as for (128), by reduction of the protected tertiary phosphine (as its oxide) with HSiCl3.251 The analogous phosphonium salt (129) is also known.2 2 The chiral quaternized phosphine (130) has been documented,253 whilst protonation of the rhodium(I) complex containing (131) with aqueous HBF4 gave a water-soluble complex.254 Addition of a weak base (NEt3) cleanly reversed this reaction. 

A mixed-valence complex of metal(dmit)2 (H2dmit = 4,5-dimercapto-l,3-dithiolo-2-thione) system is one of the promising candidates for the preparation of conductive LB films with higher dimensionality [27]. This sulfur-rich 1,2-dithiolene complex has provided three molecular superconductors, TTF[Ni(dmit)2]2 [28], TTF[Pd(dmit)2l2 [29], and Me4N[Ni(dmit)2]2 [30]. By the introduction of the alkylammonium group as a counter cation, the complexes become amphiphilic, and suitable for the construction of LB films.

As of yet the molecular details of the interaction mechanism between carboxylic ionophores and the polar phospholipids have not been established. Work in our laboratory on the interaction of lasalocid A and alkylammonium ions too bulky to form true inclusion complexes suggests that ion pair formation between the terminal carboxylate of the ionophore and the alkylammonium groups of PC and PE polar...
