Using assay conditions where both substrates were used at km levels chaetomellic, actinoplanic, oreganic and zaragozic acids and alkyl citrates (for example, viridiofungins) were discovered from different microbial extracts. These compounds were potent selective inhibitors of FPTase activity and did not inhibit GGPTase or squalene synthase. All five classes of compounds were competitive with respect to FPP and were reversible inhibitors of FPTase activity. Three additional reports have appeared during the intervening period that described the isolation of CP 225917, manumycin, and RPR 113228 as FPP competitive inhibitors. Fe203 and Fe304 in presence of a chloride source act as flame retardants for nitrile-containing plastics and rubbers such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymers.52 The activity appears to be connected with the formation of FeCl3 on combustion, but other properties of FeCl3 itself make it unsuitable for direct use. Most detergents contain electrolytes, e.g. sulphate, bicarbonate, carbonate or citrate and the presence of these electrolytes increases the adsorption of anionic surfactants at the gas/liquid interface as already mentioned. This leads to a reduction of the surface tension at an equal solution concentration [7] and to a strong decrease of the cmc. The effect can be of several orders of magnitude. Similar to this are the effects of mixtures of surfactants with the same hydrophilic group and different alkyl chain length or mixtures of anionic and non-ionic surfactants as they are mostly used in detergency [8].
