Pd-catalyzed alkynylation with 1-haloalkynes has not been extensively investigated. In cases where organometals are readily obtainable via hydrometallation or carbometallation, Pd-catalyzed alkenyl-alkynyl coupling may prove to be more advantageous than the corresponding reaction of alkynylmetals with alkenyl halides. 

Aryl chlorides can also be used as coupling partners for azabismocine reagents 2. In the coupling reaction with aryl chlorides, Pd(PPh3)4 was not an efficient catalyst, and Pd(OAc)2/l,l,-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (dppf) combination was found to be effective [54]. Not only the arylation, but also methylation, alkenylation and alkynylation reactions can be accomplished by using the corresponding bismuth compounds (Scheme 35). The addition of CsF improved the product yields. However, electron-rich aryl chlorides were unable to be coupled efficiently under these reaction conditions. 

Palladium-mediated cydization based on the reactivity of o-alkynyl or alkenyl-phenyl isonitriles have been developed [105]. On the basis of their earlier studies on the three-component synthesis of allyl aryl cyanamides [106], Yamamoto and co-workers reported a palladium-catalyzed three-component coupling reaction of 2-alkynylisocyanobenzenes 122 with allyl methyl carbonate and trimethylsilylazide leading to N-cyanoindoles 125 [107]. One of the key steps of the proposed mechanism is the formation of 7i-allylpalladium carbodiimide 123 and its isomerization to rc-allylpalladium cyanamide complex 124 (Scheme 8.50). 

Various aryl, alkenyl and even alkylborane reagents of different reactivity can be used for coupling with aryl, alkenyl, alkynyl and some alkyl halides, offering very useful synthetic methods. Alkynylsilanes can be converted into alkynylcoppers by treatment with Cu salts in an aprotic polar solvent such as l,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone (DMI).62 The Cu-promoted coupling reactions via the Si-Cu transmetallation of alkynylsilanes are valuable for the syntheses of alkynyl ketones, 1,3-diynes, 1,3-enynes, and 1-aryl-l-alkynes from acid chlorides,62 alkynyl chlorides,63 alkenyl iodides,64 and aryl iodides,64 respectively (Equation (12)).
