Alkazid process

ALkazid Process Alkali Salts of Amino Acids (N-Methylaminopropionic Acid)... 

The Alkazid process removes sulfur compounds from gas streams. All the sulfur compounds are first catalytically hydrogenated to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) using a cobalt/molybdena catalyst. The H2S is then absorbed in an aqueous solution of potassium salt of either methylamino propionic acid ( Alkazid M ), or dimethylamino acetic acid ( Alkazid DIK ). This solution is heated to regenerate the hydrogen sulfide as a concentrate. This concentrate is then treated by the Claus process to recover the sulfur1. 

The Fischer-Tropsch process requires synthesis gas in which the total sulfur does not exceed 2.0 mg./cubic meter. This purification was done in two stages (1) Removal of hydrogen sulfide and (2) removal of organic sulfur. The removal of hydrogen sulfide is almost universally carried out by the well known iron oxide process. At the Luetzkendorf plant, the so-called Alkazid process had been installed, in which a solution of an alkaline organic compound absorbs the hydrogen sulfide, which is then continuously stripped from the solution by steam. At Luetzkendorf, the evolved hydrogen sulfide was converted into elemental sulfur. 

It is therefore related to such processes as the Alkazid (25) which involve preliminary hydrogen reduction to H2S before Claus treatment.

The two BASF processes, A/l zzid M (potassium monomethylamino-propionate) and Alkazid-DIK (potassium dimethylaminoacetate), which had been frequently used in the past to remove minute quantities of CO2 and H2S or to remove H2S selectively, have no more chance today of competing with modem coal gas purification processes for methanol production.
