From Aryl Cyanides Acid Nitriles),— The aromatic cyanides which were simply referred to as substitution products (p. 521) are, of course, like the aliphatic cyanides, nitriles of acids which they yield on hydrolysis. 

Recent research into the Ritter reaction has concentrated on alternative means of generating the carbocation. Radiolytically formed carbocations have been reacted in the gas phase with aromatic and aliphatic cyanides yielding the corresponding nitrilium ions, which undergo condensation with water to yield A -alkylamides. 

The detection of aromatic and aliphatic cyanides can be carried out by heating the solid sample or a dry residue in a micro test tube in admixtiue with elemental sulfur. Thiocyanic acid is formed, and this can be detected on the basis of its reaction with ferric salts (58). 

A specific test for aliphatic cyanides consists, according to Feigl et al. (58), in the heating of the substance with a mixture of CaO and CaC03 at 250 °C, during which hydrogen cyanide is liberated. It can be detected by the sensitive reaction with copper (II) acetate and benzidine.
