Algorithms convergence

Step 4 rejects the new point and decreases the step bounds if ratiok < 0. This step can only be repeated a finite number of times because, as the step bounds approach zero, the ratio approaches 1.0. Step 6 decreases the size of the trust region if the ratio is too small, and increases it if the ratio is close to 1.0. Zhang et al. (1986) proved that a similar SLP algorithm converges to a stationary point of P from any initial point. 

Initially, we develop Matlab code and Excel spreadsheets for relatively simple systems that have explicit analytical solutions. The main thrust of this chapter is the development of a toolbox of methods for modelling equilibrium and kinetic systems of any complexity. The computations are all iterative processes where, starting from initial guesses, the algorithms converge toward the correct solutions. Computations of this nature are beyond the limits of straightforward Excel calculations. Loy (11) has published a procedure based upon the method of Balke and Hamielec which uses a more efficient Iterative, single-variable search algorithm which relies upon the fact that the dispersity (M /it) is a function of C2 only. The direction given by —H(0s) lVU 0s) is a descent direction only when the Hessian matrix is positive definite. For this reason, the Newton-Raphson algorithm is less robust than the steepest descent method hence, it does not guarantee the convergence toward a local minimum. Simplex Algorithm An optimization algorithm which is robust and simple, and has become popular. The value of the objective function is calculated for n + 1 different sets of experimental conditions, n being equal to the number of parameters to optimize. The values obtained are compared, the less favorable set is eliminated and replaced by a third set derived from the previous three by following simple rules. The algorithm converges if the objective function is well behaved.
