The polysaccharide can exist in a number of chemical forms. It is composed of uronic acids. If the acid groups are in the acid form (-COOH), the polysaccharide is called alginic acid, which is water insoluble. If the acid groups are in the car-boxylate form (-COO ) it is as the alginate or sodium salt (-COONa) or sodium alginate, which is water soluble. If the sodium ions are replaced by a divalent metal ion such as calcium, barium, or strontium, the polysaccharide is cross-linked by the metal ions to form gels. [Pg.180]

Algin occurs in all members of the class Phaeophjceae, brown seaweed, as a stmctural component of the cell walls in the form of the insoluble mixed calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium salt of alginic acid. [Pg.431]

A variety of organic adhesives which are capable of forming strong bonds between a polymeric (acrylate) restoration and the hydrophilic tooth material have recently been developed. A number of these monomers, which possess a pendent ionizable group, are polymerized in the mouth to form an adhesive layer. Alginates, which are used as impression materials, are formed by the reaction of the sodium salt of anhydro-beta-d-mannuronic acid with calcium sulfate. Calcium ions crosslink the linear polymer to form a gel. This reaction is carried out inside the mouth, and the gel formed retains the shape of the oral cavity. [Pg.15]
