Alcohol-induced pancreatitis

The raised amylase suggests acute alcohol-induced pancreatitis. [Pg.345]

Alcohol excess may produce proteinaceous plugs in the small pancreatic j ducts, causing back pressure injury and autodigestion of the pancreatic acini drained by these obstructed channels. This process causes one form of acute pancreatitis. A1 Martini had an episode of acute alcohol-induced pancreatitis superimposed on a more chronic alcohol-related inflammatory process in the pancreas—in other words, a chronic pancreatitis. As a result of decreased secretion of pancreatic lipase through the pancreatic ducts and into the lumen of the small intestine, dietary fat was not absorbed at a normal rate, and steatorrhea (fat-rich... [Pg.591]

Measurement of serum y-GT activity has clinical significance. The enzyme is present in all tissues, but the highest level is in the kidney however, the serum enzyme originates primarily from the hepatobiliary system. Elevated levels of serum y-GT are found in the following disorders intra- and posthepatic biliary obstruction (elevated serum y-GT indicates cholestasis, as do leucine aminopeptidase, 5 -nucleotidase, and alkaline phosphatase) primary or disseminated neoplasms some pancreatic cancers, especially when associated with hepatobiliary obstruction alcohol-induced liver disease (serum y-GT may be exquisitely sensitive to alcohol-induced liver injury) and some prostatic carcinomas (serum from normal males has 50% higher activity than that of females). Increased activity is also found in patients receiving phenobarbital or phenytoin, possibly due to induction of y-GT in liver cells by these drugs. [Pg.335]

Abstinence from alcohol is an important factor in preventing abdominal pain in the early stages of alcohol-induced chronic pancreatitis. [Pg.721]

Telekin from the roots of Telekia speciosa, helenin from the roots of Inula helenium L., and sesquiterpene alcohol ledol from the aerial parts of Ledum palustre L. show cytotoxicity [41]. Bisabolol, a nontoxic sesquiterpene alcohol, was isolated from Matricaria chamomilla, Carthamus lanatus, and Matricaria recutita and exhibits a cytotoxic apoptosis-inducing effect [42] against human glioblastoma and pancreatic carcinoma cell lines. [Pg.3528]
