When yohimbine is heated with potash solution it is eonverted into potassium yohimbate, from which yohimbic acid (the forms yohimboie and yohimboaic are also used and noryohimbine), C20H24O3N2. Sempervirine, C19H1JN2. H2O. From the alkaline liquid, after removal of gelsemine by ether, Moore observed that amyl alcohol extracted two amorphous alkaloids, of which the more basie was probably Thompson s gelseminine. From this material erystalline sempervirine was obtained by Stevenson and Sayre, and later by Chou, but a formula was first assigned to it by Hasenfratz. The configurations assigned to (8) and (9) were established by comparison with the products resulting from epoxidation of 3-methyl-5a-cholest-2-ene followed by reduction with lithium aluminum hydride to the alcohol (9). The usual /ra 5-diaxial epoxide opening requires that the hydroxyl group, formed by reduction, is axial as shown in (9).

An alcohol of the formula Cj Hj O was isolated from oil of ginger-grass by Schimmel Co., and described by them as dihydrocuminic alcohol. It has, however, now been shown by Semmler and Zaar not to have the constitution assigned to it by Schimmel Co., but to be identical with the alcohol obtained by reducing perillic aldehyde, Cj<,H 40, the aldehyde characteristic of the essential oil of PerUla nankinensis.
