Alarm signals sensitivity

Because an exact temperature of 37 "C is essential for the accurate measurement of blood gases and pH, state-of-the-art instrumentation is fiirnished with thermal sensors embedded in the heat sink around the measuring chamber and communicating to the microprocessor. Audible or visible alarms signal deviation of temperature outside of preset tolerances (usually 37 C + 0.1 °C). False SUFFOCATION ALARM THEORY This theory proposes that panic disorder patients have a suffocation monitor located in the brainstem, which misinterprets signals and misfires, triggering a false suffocation alarm (panic attack). The experiments with H. M. employed a battery of tests. One set of experiments measured his sensitivity by means of a technique derived from signal detection theory (Corbit Engen, 1971), in which I asked H. M. to sniff 20 presentations of dilute odorant solution randomly interspersed with 20 presentations of odorless blank. The odor was so faint as to make it hard to tell it apart from blank.
