Neutrophil elastase is a strong secretagogue of the airway submucosal gland (Sommerhoff et al. 1990), and suppressing the pulmonary recruitment of neutrophils by reducing the production of neutrophil chemotactic factors such as lL-8 could expectedly result in a decrement of excessive airway... 

It appears that a substantial part of the airway surfactant is derived from the alveolar region, but there is also evidence for local production of surfactant. Widdicombe (41) reviewed the possible sources and potential biological role of tracheal surfactants. He concluded that the trachea contains a complex mixture of lipids, including surface-active phospholipids not characteristic of alveolar surfactant. Experiments (60) have shown that nonciliated cells of the bronchioles produce surface-active material and that these cells are involved in ion and water transport. Autoradiographic studies of human and guinea-pig airways have demonstrated the presence of tachykinin receptors on vascular smooth muscle, airway epithelium and submucosal glands, with a particularly hi density on airway smooth muscle from the trachea to small bronchioles (Castairs and Barnes, 1986 Hoover and Hancock, 1987). In contrast, in rat airways, there is no labelling of airway smooth muscle (Sertl et al., 1988). 

Airway secretions consist of the mucus synthesized and released by submucosal glands and goblet cells, and the water transported across airway mucosa [42].
